News: Romney Adds Ryan, DNC Platform, Tom DeLay

ROMNEY ADDS PAUL RYAN AS GOP VP: “Mitt Romney introduced Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate on Saturday at a spirited rally in Norfolk, Va., bringing to his side one of the party’s young conservative leaders in a move that altered the contours of the campaign and sharpened the choice facing the voters in November.” — New York Times 8/11/12

“Now that Ryan’s on board, the conservatives who have been waiting for the moderate Romney shoe to drop are going to breathe much easier. In recent days, the conservative push for Ryan reached a fever pitch, just as national polls showed Obama surging ahead in the national contest. The Wall Street Journal gave Ryan a rare endorsement for the VP slot, which put the establishment paper in line with the tea-party wing of the GOP — the conservative blog RedState, among others, also begged Romney to pick Ryan.” — Talking Points Memo 8/11/12

“Various statistical measures of Mr. Ryan peg him as being quite conservative. Based on his Congressional voting record, for instance, the statistical system DW-Nominate evaluates him as being roughly as conservative as Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.

“By this measure, in fact, which rates members of the House and Senate throughout different time periods on a common ideology scale, Mr. Ryan is the most conservative Republican member of Congress to be picked for the vice-presidential slot since at least 1900. He is also more conservative than any Democratic nominee was liberal, meaning that he is the furthest from the center … ” — New York Times 8/11/12

DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM ADDS MARRIAGE EQUALITY: “The Democratic Party’s Drafting Committee has released the actual language the Platform Committee will soon vote on, before it is put before the convention delegates in Charlotte, North Carolina early next month. The language calls for support of same sex marriage equality, a repeal of DOMA, and passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.” — New Civil Rights Movement 8/9/12

TOM DELAY CASE UPDATE: “In a letter sent today, Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson assigned 9th Court of Appeals Justice David Gaultney to the 3rd Court of Appeals panel that will hear former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s appeal of his 2010 convictions for conspiracy to money launder and money laundering.” — Texas Lawyer Blog 8/8/12

“The Tom DeLay legal marathon inched forward Wednesday … “

” … DeLay, who is fighting his conviction and three-year prison sentence, finally knows which three justices on the 3rd Court of Appeals will hear his appeal.”

“DeLay’s appeal has been stalled because three of the appellate court’s six justices, all Republicans, recused themselves from the case without comment and a fourth, Justice Diane Henson, a Democrat, was removed from the case after DeLay’s lawyer complained of “anti-[Republican] remarks she made at a political convention six years ago.” — Austin Statesman 8/8/12
